very poor idle qualities. 2nd is the 1971 Thermoquad only used on the 340 engines; it was a decent carb, with 1-3/8" od primary butterflies & 2-1/4". 2ndary butterfly id's. It does not use the same jets/metering rods/piston as the 1972-1984 carbs and is not as "tuneable" and does not respond well to bolt on mods as the 1972-up carbs.

The modern day version of the of the Thermoquad is the Holley "Street Demon". Designed by the same guy that did the AFB, AVS, and the original Thermoquad. Who is this "same guy" ? He would be an interesting guy to talk to. No idea, but they probably worked for Carter. That little tidbit was in a rather obscure article, on the Street demons ...

Here are some old notes I kept on the thermoquad's rods and jets, fwiw. Some of this info is from the 1975 Scout II xlc factory manual. As usual for IH, it included generic 392 engine info as well. V345, 392, cal and fed: main jet: 0.098", rod 75-2020 has dimensions, in inches, of 0.064-0.052-0.045.

Posts: 89. Experience with Demon & Edelbrock AVS carbs. I am considering purchasing a new carburator for my Road Runner. I have enjoyed the tried and true Holley 750 in both the vacuum secondary and double pump versions. I believe throttle response could be better and Holley carbs typically run a little on the rich side at idle and part throttle.
