When I go deck awash for an extended period of time (about 8 hours or more), my watch officer and two other crewmen all of a sudden appear on top of the conning tower and automatically re-enter the ship through the top hatch WHILE IT IS STILL DECK AWASH. This allows over 1.5 cubic meters of water to leak into the hull that I have to pump out every time.

DECKS AWASH (DA), as used here, means to operate at the deepest depth that the diesels will run continuously . The advantage in doing this is that, when compared to being fully surfaced, much less time is needed to disappear below the waves. If a threat appears, go to DA early and avoid being pounded (or sunk) as you wait, and wait, and wait, to submerge.

Yes, I did that yesterday, running at all ahead full through a convoy flooded down to decks awash, then headed for home forgetting to surface and killed TM2 Kublinsky.

Navigationally, decks awash running is one of the most dangerous things to do for modern subs, they have a low profile and if there are other vessels present they likely wont see the sail. It wouldnt be practical really. Pericope depth, surfaced and submerged …
