He doesn't work horrible hours (50ish hrs/wk), and is making great bank. That said, DE Shaw gives these kinds of starting offers to super quants, not to the straight up finance guys, as the latter are a lot more common and much easier replaced. Hedge Fund Pitch Template.

At D.E. Shaw, most people on the technical side work 45-50 hours a week, don't work evenings, and don't work on weekends. There are of course crunch times and certainly times when I'm excited enough about a particular project that I work longer hours or extra days, but it's not the rule.
