I'm not exactly sure what the difference is. I think it has to do with their gestational age or their weight. My girls are considered micro-premies. They were born at 24 weeks and weighed 1.8, 1.8, and 1.7 pounds. They have been in the NICU for about a month now. They weigh about 2 pounds give or take an ounce.
