Mar 14, 2014 · Some towers in Class C airspace prefer to have departing VFR aircraft make the initial call to clearance delivery. At these airports the ATIS should include a statement indicating that preference as there's otherwise no reason a departing VFR aircraft would call clearance delivery.

Mar 25, 2007 · Not correct. You need not contact Clearance Delivery at a Class D airport. The only reason you have to contact CD at a Class C or B airport is because you need a transponder code and clearance to enter the airspace. By contacting CD at a Class C or B airport, you obtain those two things.

Oct 16, 2017 · Most (or all, I’m not totally sure) Class C airports, want to know who is departing their airspace whether they are on IFR flight plans OR VFR flight plans. So, they will require all VFR traffic to call Clearance delivery for a squawk prior to takeoff.

Pilots operating under Instrument Flight Rules will generally use it prior to each flight, and at airfields in class C or class B airspace it's used by VFR pilots as well (since they'll be talking to departure controllers very shortly after take off until clear of the controlled airspace).
