Jul 24, 2014 · First off, it appears to be trying to deliver it to root, even though the webmaster account exists. Secondly, it is telling me to "create maildir file", when both /root/Maildir and /home/webmaster/Maildir exist.

For maildir delivery, postfix changes to the corresponding user, so the destination directory needs to be writable by the user. This seems to be already the case. For privacy reason, I suggest chmod -R o-rwx /var/spool/mail/*.

Based on both logs from mercury and ALex_hha, I can concluded that there are different behavior when mail was delivered by virtual daemon (ALex_hha case) or local daemon (mercury case). When virtual daemon can't deliver email because of permission issue, it will use defer the email (soft bounce), so the email stays in queue.

I wasn't involved with the initial install of the server and have joined in late as a hope to fix these issues they're having. I unfortunately can't figure it out. However, there is no mention of QMAIL_DIR in userdel code and it is unclear how MAIL_DIR and/or MAIL_FILE should be set for Maildir support (yes, I am too lazy to test it right now). This a solution for Maildir delivery that only requires changing the configuration for exim.
