If you want to live somewhere affordable and work in the city, you’re going to have to commute 1 to 2 hours away. If you’re lucky and manage to live downtown (because you get paid enough / have rent control and moved in before rent costs skyrocketed) and have a job downtown, you can estimate 30 to 40 minutes, depending on how you get to work.

These days your health comes first. A 2-hour commute each way means a 15-hour day plus one hour to get up and ready and one hour to relax and eat dinner. Those two hours each way could be incredibly useful if you can get some work done on the way, or even sleep. I had a one hour commute when I lived in London, and for the money I was making combined with the cheap rent I was paying, I saved a fortune. I also knew a lot of people who did a similar if not longer commute.
