As fate would have it, I stumbled upon a great alternative, however, and booked a tour of Claiborne Farm just north of Lexington. I believe it's by arrangement only so be sure to call in advance. They run at 10 and 11 (and perhaps later) if demand allows.

This is one of the only farms that still offers a tour to individuals without going through a large company. They offer one tour a day at 11:30 that you can book directly with them. The tour is conducted by one of the grooms and is free except for the tip ($10-20/person) for the groom.
