40 reviews of Café Papeneiland "This is yet another brown café that lives up to the press. It's decorated with beautiful tiles, floor to ceiling windows, lovely lights and a center piece of a stove. (If I win the lottery, some metal worker is making me a replica of that stove!) I think I could do an entire trip through Amsterdam in which I only drank and ate my way through brown cafés!

Cafe Papeneiland is one of the most authentic, inviting, and picturesque bruine kroegs (brown bars) in all of Amsterdam. Datining back to the mid 1600's (anno 1642), you can' t get much more authentic, one step in the door and the ambiance created by the leaded glass, wood paneled walls, and Delft tiles takes you right b.ack in time.

Café Papeneiland No trip to Amsterdam is complete without a stop in one of the bruine kroeg, or brown cafés. These are the Dutch equivalent of Irish pubs, cozy spaces where people gather to relax over beers and comfort food. And Café Papeneiland is a classic. Stop in for a sip of jenever and a slice of Dutch apple pie.

On Prinsengracht 7 there used to be a Catholic hidden church. The escape route from this shelter church ran to this building, which is why the cafe was called Papeneiland. Whether that corridor ever really existed is unknown, but the remains of an escape corridor can still be seen in the cafe.
