Senghenydd (or Sengenith) was a large park and hunting ground for the Lords of Caerphilly Castle. The Universal Colliery was sunk in 1892 and a mining village was formed. In 1901 an explosion occurred killing 81 men, followed by another in 1913, when 440 were killed, this being the biggest mining disaster in British History.
