The Dia Art Foundation commissiones from Walter De Maria at 393 West Broadway an installation called "The Broken Kilometer". There are 500 brass rods which result, in one row, in a kilometer. (For an European it is interesting that american artists also calculate in meters and kilometers.) This installation has striked us by its severity.
