BL Lacertae objects, abbreviated BL Lac, are one subclass of active galactic nuclei (AGN), the extremely energetic nuclei of active galaxies. Roughly 40 BL Lac objects are known. Perhaps the most obvious property of BL Lac objects is that they look like stars. Astronomers originally thought the prototype, BL Lac, was a star.

Mar 01, 1990 · CCD image photometry data for 12 BL Lacertae objects have been obtained during 17 months. Light curves and photometric data are presented and discussed. The results suggest that a large amplitude variation ({DELTA}m >= 0.45 mag) on a short time scale (from a few hundred seconds to several hours) is a relatively rare phenomenon. Five of 12 BL Lac objects are variable on these time scales.Cited by: 9

When light or other electromagnetic radiation is polarized, the directions of the oscillations are the same. The amount of polarization and the brightness of BL Lac objects is highly variable. This variability is very rapid and erratic. They can change very significantly in times as short as 24 hours or less.

of BL Lac objects as faint as 20mag are possible. This allowed us to observe large samples of BL Lac objects within a reason-abletime,withanadequatesamplingandwitherrorslowerthan in any other frequency regime. Despite the fact that several groups put major efforts in ob-serving BL Lac objects on …

rapid optical variability with 0.1 mag over a few hours and flicker with the amplitude ∆V = 0.03 mag per 2 minutes [19], steep optical spectrum following a single power law similar to quasars but showing no emission lines [17]. On the basis of the absorption features, detected in the optical spectra obtained with the 5m Hale telescope the redshift of BL Lacertae was determined [18].
