The beach is really nice for the outer drive on section. There isn't miles of beach so if you want to drive on then I'd recommend getting an early start. Not that you won't find a spot around 11-12pm, but it might not be as easy. The airing down section is not very big and can get a bit chaotic, especially later in the day (4-5pm).

Bought tickets to Beach Blanket Babylon ($60/ea) playing at Club Fugazi. Saturday shows are at 7:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. (Suggest getting tickets early in order to avoid sellouts--this show is very popular.) Arrived just after noon and walked around North Beach (Little Italy) and Chinatown.
