Heating degree days (HDD) are a measure of how cold the temperature was on a given day or during a period of days. For example, a day with a mean temperature of 40°F has 25 HDD. Two such cold days in a row have a total of 50 HDD for the two-day period. The West North Central division had the largest number of heating degree days in 2020.

Figure 1 shows each year’s average heating and cooling degree days across the contiguous 48 states. Figures 2 and 3 show how heating and cooling degree days have changed by state, based on a comparison of the first 63 years of available data (1895–1957) with the most recent 63 years (1958–2020).

Heating degree-days are the number of degrees that the daily average temperature falls below 65° F. Cooling degree-days are the number of degrees that the daily average temperature rises above 65° F. The daily average temperature is the mean of the maximum and minimum temperatures in a 24-hour period. For example, a weather station recording ...

78°F - 65°F = 13 Cooling Degree Days. Example 2: The high temperature for a particular day was 33°F and the low temperature was 25°F. The temperature mean for that day was: ( 33°F + 25°F ) / 2 = 29°F. Because the result is below 65°F: 65°F - 29°F = 36 Heating Degree Days. The calculations shown in the two examples above are performed ...

Hi. I am interested in explanation on how to calculate the heating load of a single room, if we know the annual heating degree hours? But doing this by hand, not using EnergyPlus, DOE or similar energy analysis application. I just want to understand the principle for now. Is this is the right approach: heating load (per hour) = total heat loss (per hour) * heating degree hour For …

Now you have btu’s per hour per degree Multiply that by 24 and you get btu’s per day per degree. Look up the heating degree days (HDD) for your location use base 65 as a first estimate. Multiply HDD * (btu’s per day per degree) and what is left is yearly BTU’s This is a crude approximation, but it will get you in the ballpark .
