The archaeological site of Ancient Thira is open daily except Tuesdays from 08:30 am until 14:30 pm. Our buses depart from our offices in Kamari (see map below). There is a departure per hour from 09:00 to 13:00 to the top of Mesa Vouno mountain where the old capital lies. There, visitors have free time to walk and enjoy the ancient site.

The ruins are well documented in English and if you can take your time and read the historical markers it is really a fascinating visit. Limited hours! Closed Mondays and only open from 0830-1430 on other days! I would rate it 5, but the limited hours gets it reduced to a 4.4.5/5(2.3K)

Appears to be closed off season. I saw a couple of offices in Kamari displaying the Ancient Thira Tours logo which, I understand, means taking you up to the site in a minibus and back down again. Today neither office showed any signs of life so in the end I walked it - about 40 minutes to the entrance, a very.4/537 TripAdvisor reviews

ANCIENT THIRA. Ancient Thera, the Classical city of the island is located on Mesa Vouno, 396 m. above sea level. It was founded in the 9th century B.C. by Dorian colonists whose leader was Theras, and continued to be inhabited until the early Byzantine period. The preserved ruins belong to the Hellenistic and Roman phases of the city.
