Had 8 hours to kill in Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam so I took a quick 15 minute train ride into the city and went on a layover day trip!

Of course the Rijksmuseum is worth a visit but after 20 hours of traveling that might not be the best option. Amsterdam surely is worth some hours and absolutely beats 8 hours in an airport lounge (I do not know the Sky lounge in AMS but 8 hours at the FCT in Frankfurt would be too long for me) P.S. Of course assuming your layover is during the day.

8 hour layover at Amsterdam airport. Hi everyone. I will be having a lengthy layover (8 hours) at the Amsterdam airport this coming September. Our flight arrives at 7:15am and departs at 3:25pm. I was hoping this would be enough time to leave the airport and walk around and do a (very little) bit of sightseeing.

What you can do during your Amsterdam Schiphol layover depends on a number of factors: Time available between your flights – You need at least 4 hours transit time to comfortably reach the city. 4 hours may be a bit of a rush, whilst 6-7 hours would hopefully allow a more stress-free visit.

If you have the luxury of at least an 8-hour layover (or longer) in Amsterdam, you can afford to take your time and explore a little further out from Centraal station. Take advantage of the hop-on, hop-off canal tours

If you have an 8-hour layover in Amsterdam, you might be able to find time to visit the Anne Frank house. But you would not have time to do much else. If you want to see tulips growing in a field, you don’t want to go to Amsterdam. You want to visit the countryside, which is not really feasable if you have an 8-hour layover.

The main museums in Amsterdam include the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, and the Anne Frank House, but are only recommended for more than 5 hours layovers. Also, until the end of 2009, the Stedelijk Museum of art is temporarily in a former postal building to the left of the train station.
