You can get near the lighthouse coming from either the south or north side. It's locked behind Coast Guard post so that was a let down but the area was a fun place to visit and really glad we made the short trip. Also, go when it's low tide. Alki Point marked the southern approach to Seattle Harbor and was an important departure point for vessel venturing south on Puget Sound.

Up until the 1980s, all the operations at the Alki Point Lighthouse were manual. Coast Guardsmen assigned to the station, were standing eight-hour watches, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The airway beacon was turned on one-half hour before sunset and was turned off one-half hour after sunrise by the duty lighthouse keeper.

Alki Beach Park is a long beach strip that runs roughly from 64th Place SW to Duwamish Head on Elliott Bay. It's a great spot for a long walk any time of year, and in the summer draws joggers, rollerbladers, volleyball players, sunbathers, bicyclists and strollers out to enjoy the sun.
