Akaka falls isn't too far from Hilo, maybe 10 miles or so. It really shouldn't take you more than 45 minutes to an hour to take the very short loop trail to see the falls. This isn't an all-day event.

Because it's a State Park I'm guessing it has the normal 8-5 hours that most public places have. The small parking lot does have a gate but many people just park on the road just prior to the gate and park for free. There's no way to close a park like Akaka Falls so I assume you can just walk in after hours. The park itself is free.
