First post office i went to was a small local one, they insisted I pay for it if it was special delivery even though it was freepost, went to a larger branch who sent it via special delivery, giving me the proof of postage but without me having to pay.

For important documents where you need guaranteed delivery next day with online tracking and the ability to obtain proof of delivery at no extra charge, I'd recommend Royal Mail Special Delivery.

Freepost can only be used if the recipient has a freepost account. It goes through a completely different business service than normal stamped mail therefore when it goes to be dealt with by the Business section, it will be identified as not freepost and put back into the normal post as mail with no duty paid and the recipient will be surcharged.
