What many moms don’t realize is that this *can* change dramatically around the 3-4 month mark. Babies who used to feed every 1 to 3 hours, for 30 minutes or more, babies who were always happy to breastfeed when offered - suddenly start refusing the breast at times, and when they do accept, may only feed for a few minutes before pulling off.

A 3 month old formula fed baby typically takes 6-8 ounces per feed every 3-4 hours, and a breastfed baby will often take 4 ounces every 2-3 hours. This means that breastfed babies are more likely to wake up at night to eat, after 3-6 hours of sleep, compared to a formula fed baby.

I try to wake her up or get her to take it again but it doesn't work. She does sleep 7-8 hours at night so I'm not sure if that's why she needs to eat so often during the day.

In the first few weeks of life, breastfeeding should be "on demand" (when your baby is hungry), which is about every 1-1/2 to 3 hours. As newborns get older, they'll nurse less often, and may have a more predictable schedule.
